'Mom Prom' an annual event hosted by the Family Resource Centre (FRC), brought laughter, dancing, and heartfelt connections to moms from across the community over the weekend. This year's theme, inspired by the hit TV show Friends, set the tone for a night filled with nostalgic décor, upbeat music, and a strong sense of support and camaraderie among attendees.

Melissa Morrison, Executive director of the FRC said

"We're really excited to see how the night plays out. I just love seeing all the moms fully embrace who they are, get dressed up, and just have a fun night out."

The prom-style event invited mothers to take a break from their daily routines, slip into formalwear, and enjoy an evening with friends—many of whom have grown close through shared parenting experiences.

"We chose the theme ‘Friends’ because it's all about being there for each other and building each other up as a mom community. From the food to the photo ops to the music, it's everywhere tonight." said Morrison.

The night's highlight came with the crowning of the "Prom Queen" a lighthearted tradition that left one unsuspecting attendee stunned.

"I was so shocked," said Shannon DeFreitas, this year's prom queen.

"My friends kept saying, 'That's you!' and I kept saying, 'No, no, it's not!' I even asked if there was another Shannon in the room."

Shannon received a pampering prize package that included a hair appointment with Styled by Meraki, a massage with Priscilla, eyelash extensions, ice cream treats, and dining gift cards.

"It was very shocking, but so fun," she said. "Melissa and everyone from the Family Resource Centre did a fabulous job, as they do every year."

Even behind the scenes, the impact of the event was felt. Peter Thiessen, program director at FRC, praised the event’s mission.

"There is no harder job than being a parent, to be able to give back and say, ‘We appreciate you’—that’s worth celebrating."

For moms who couldn't make it this year, DeFreitas has one message:

"You definitely have to go next year. It's an excellent, unique opportunity to connect with other moms and dance the night away."
