Portage la Prairie Mayor Sharilyn Knox highlighted her recent volunteer experience with the local Bear Clan group during a City Council meeting this past Monday. The mayor joined patrols last Friday evening, marking her first hands-on involvement with the grassroots organization.
A firsthand experience
Knox describes the Bear Clan as a volunteer-driven initiative focused on building connections across the community. Patrols typically involve cleaning public spaces, distributing essentials like water and snacks, and checking in on residents.
“They go out and they patrol the area,” she says. “This week it was the downtown area. We picked up garbage, we met some people, we gave out some waters, we gave out some granola bars, just sort of checked in on where how people are doing and where they’re at in that time.”
Community efforts noticed
The mayor praised both volunteers and local businesses for their roles in maintaining a welcoming city.
“It was great to actually spend time with many of the volunteers I know in other capacities, but it was great to see them working in this capacity and some new volunteers out there too,” she adds.
She specifically noted improvements in previously problematic areas, crediting downtown businesses for heightened cleanliness efforts.
“City beautification makes us a welcoming community and just gives us pride in what we’re doing,” Knox continues. “I give kudos to them for helping do their part as a business.”
Call for ongoing support
Knox encouraged council members and residents to consider volunteering, emphasizing the group’s accessibility.
“They give you all the supplies you need. You just need a smile on your face and your walking shoes,” she notes. While acknowledging her own busy schedule, the mayor hinted at future participation: “I know I will definitely go out again.”
Coordinator Jane Tully oversees the local Bear Clan chapter, which operates a Facebook page for updates.
“Jane does a great job,” Knox says. “If you ever want more information on how to help, you can reach out to her.”
The Bear Clan conducts regular patrols, relying on both dedicated volunteers and newcomers to address community needs.
