Communities around Humboldt have adopted a program to honour Canadian veterans of global conflicts with banners depicting those individuals affixed to light poles. Communities participating include Muenster, Watson, Kelvington, among others.

Now the Humboldt Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is hoping to work with the City of Humboldt to provide the same type of recognition in the city.

Projects like this have already begun spreading through many communities in Saskatchewan as families of the Veterans step forward wanting to pay tribute to their loved ones that served,” says a letter drafted by Humboldt Legion members Sherry Hogemann and Nikki Sokolan as a proposal. “As banners appear on the streets of different communities, more people express and interest in participating in the project, which also helps raise awareness for our Legion, preserving the miliary history of the region and keeping their stories alive for a new generation.”

The letter notes that when local Legion members were contacted about project, the response was overwhelmingly positive. The stated objectives of the project included engaging the community further in honouring veterans, helping educate students on the faces and stories of service, and to help ensure recognition and remembrance.

The letter stated the goal of having the banners prepared for display in the month prior to Remembrance Day of 2026. The request is to have the banners hung along Main Street from the Legion Hall to the Cenotaph at the junction of Highways 5 and 20. The Legion requested city support in helping to affix the banners during the season prior to Christmas decorations going up on the same light standards.

After a brief discussion, Council received the letter as a request with a referral to City Administration to explore the possibility with the Legion.
