Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he plans to run in the Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot, following an offer from incumbent MP Damien Kurek to resign his seat.

Multiple media outlets, including The Canadian Press, are reporting that Kurek is expected to temporarily step aside to trigger a byelection, allowing Poilievre to seek a seat in the House of Commons. According to CP, the Conservative Party has confirmed Poilievre intends to run once a byelection is called.

The riding consists of the City of Camrose as well as the towns of Bashaw, Castor, Coronation, Daysland, Drumheller, Hanna, Hardisty, Killam, Oyen, Provost, Sedgewick, Stettler, Three Hills, Tofield, Trochu, Viking and Wainwright; It also includes the villages of Acme, Alliance, Amisk, Bawlf, Big Valley, Bittern Lake, Carbon, Chauvin, Consort and  Czar among ohers.

"It is with humility and appreciation that I have accepted Damien Kurek’s offer to resign his seat in Battle River–Crowfoot so that I can work to earn the support of citizens there to serve them in Parliament," Poilievre wrote Friday on X, formerly Twitter.

"Damien’s selfless act to step aside temporarily as a Member of Parliament shows his commitment to change and restoring Canada’s promise. I will work to earn the trust of the good people of Battle River–Crowfoot and I will continue to hold the Liberal minority government to account until the next federal election, when we will bring real change to all Canadians."

As of Friday morning, DiscoverAirdrie had not independently confirmed the timing or nature of Kurek’s resignation. A request for comment has been sent to his office. However, Kurek's social media accounts on both X and Facebook reposted Poilievre's comments on Friday afternoon. 

Kurek has held the Battle River–Crowfoot seat since 2019. Kurek was re-elected to the seat Monday, capturing nearly 82 per cent of the vote (53,502 votes)

Other areas in the riding include: Delia, Donalda, Edberg, Edgerton, Empress, Forestburg, Halkirk, Hay Lakes, Heisler, Holden, Hughenden, Irma, Linden, Lougheed, Morrin, Munson, Rosalind, Ryley, Veteran and Youngstown; the summer villages of Rochon Sands and White Sands; the municipal districts of Acadia No. 34, Beaver County, Camrose County, Flagstaff County, Kneehill County, Paintearth County No. 18, Provost No. 52, Starland County, Stettler County No. 6 and Wainwright No. 61; and special areas nos. 2, 3 and 4.
