The Portage Royal Canadian Legion Branch #65 is receiving a much-needed upgrade to its kitchen, thanks to a recent donation from the Community Foundation of Portage and District.
Legion Service Officer Bob Oldford says the foundation’s ongoing support has a meaningful impact on the Legion’s ability to give back to veterans.
“We really enjoyed the fact that the foundation is supportive of the Legion and helping us to do things to serve the community better,” notes Oldford.
The funds are going toward replacing outdated kitchen equipment, some of which has been in use for over 20 years. The kitchen at Branch #65 plays a central role during the Legion’s most important events, including Remembrance Day services, fundraising dinners, as well as many Veteran's breakfasts and dinners. With the current appliances showing their age, the upgrade couldn’t come at a better time.
“We're getting two new stoves, two new fridges and a microwave so that we can better help serve the community when we do our veterans' meals,” adds Oldford.
For Legion members and volunteers, the recent cheque is more than just financial support—it’s a clear sign that the community values and stands behind their ongoing service. They view the upgrade as an important step toward keeping their facilities safe, efficient, and welcoming well into the future.
