The Completely Branded RentPro Weyburn Razorbacks gave the defending Prairie Gold Lacrosse League champions all they could handle Saturday night at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena, but ultimately fell 22-8 to the Prince Albert Predators in their 2025 home opener.

Despite the final scoreline, coach Kyle Bellegay emphasized that there were plenty of positives to take away from the game.

“Overall, I thought we played a good game,” Bellegay said after the loss. “We had some defensive breakdowns, but I don't think the score definitely reflected our guys. They came out, played with a lot of passion… that was a pretty well-balanced team over there.”

It was only the second home opener in franchise history for the Razorbacks, who joined the PGLL last season. Weyburn's special teams gave the hometown fans something to cheer about, with a strong showing both on the power play and penalty kill, including a shorthanded goal.

“Our short man was one of the keys to the game,” Bellegay noted. “They played very strong for us. We’ve got to be a little more disciplined, but our power play chipped in with a couple key goals too. So overall, the special teams was a plus for us.”

Offensively, Ryder Hignett led the way for Weyburn with a hat trick and one assist. Sam Borschowa had a goal and three assists, continuing to build on the chemistry he shares with Hignett both on and off the floor.

“I think it’s just chemistry,” Borschowa said. “We’re good buddies. We hang out quite a bit, and in practice we just take every rep together, try to work together to get better.”

Wyatt Mickler and Jack Missal added two goals each for Weyburn in the effort.

Prince Albert, meanwhile, showed why they remain the team to beat in the PGLL. Talon Sandry and Matthew Cudmore each scored six times to power the Predators to their second win of the season.

Now sitting at 1-1, the Razorbacks will look to regroup ahead of their next game Friday night, when they host the Moose Jaw Mustangs.

“We’ll regroup on Tuesday, Thursday,” said Bellegay. “We’ve got a couple practices, shore up a few things defensively and get our systems back into play and be ready for Friday.”

Borschowa echoed that optimism.

“I think we’ve got a lot more to show this league, and we can compete to make the playoffs this year.”
