A swim program in a Winnipeg school is making sure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the water.
Through Gordon Bell's inclusive Aquatics Program, eight students in Grades 7 to 12 with complex needs can participate in swimming and other water activities at Seven Oaks Pool.
"I recognize the incredible benefits water provides for my students," said Catherine Roch, Inclusive Education Classroom Teacher to the Winnipeg School Division. "It has been an extremely successful program, allowing all students complete access to an aquatic environment."
The program is held at Seven Oaks Pool because it offers water wheelchairs, a pool entry ramp and a mechanical lift.
Through this program, students, with help from occupational therapists and physiotherapists, can learn fine motor skills, build social skills and explore sensory challenges.
The program runs in partnership with the School Therapy Services program at the Specialized Services for Children and Youth (SSCY) Centre and takes place from October through May.
