After years of wear and tear, the Tupper Street overpass in Portage la Prairie is finally moving toward long-awaited repairs. The bridge is part of the 45th worst road in Manitoba and has seen minor maintenance carried out on the west side of the bridge a couple of weeks ago—an early sign of what's to come.
Province enters design phase
According to Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure, the project is still in its early stages. A spokesperson shares that planning is underway to determine the path forward.
“Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is currently in the preliminary design stage for this structure rehabilitation project for the overpass on Provincial Road 240 in Portage la Prairie,” notes the provincial spokesperson.
“This stage is expected to be completed this fall and will establish timelines for the detailed design and construction stages,” they add.
Consultation and cost estimates included
Public and stakeholder input is also part of the planning process, as the province looks to shape the final design.
“Indigenous and stakeholder engagement, as well as public outreach, is also included as part of the preliminary design stage and will help to inform the preferred option for this rehabilitation project,” continues the spokesperson.
“Preliminary cost estimates for the project are approximately $26.7 million.”
