A man is facing 36 charges after Cochrane RCMP responded to multiple reports of a driver allegedly pointing a long gun at another motorist while behind the wheel of a stolen truck on Stoney Nakoda First Nation.
The incident occurred on the night of April 30, 2025. According to a news release issued the next day, RCMP said officers received "multiple reports of a male pointing a long gun at another male while driving a stolen truck."
The release opened with a correction clarifying that the helicopter involved was operated by Calgary Police Service's HAWCS unit, not the RCMP. "Cochrane RCMP regret the error and it has now been corrected," the statement read.
Police said officers quickly located the suspect vehicle. RCMP allege the driver "drove head on towards an officer forcing the officer to swerve into the ditch to avoid contact." A tire deflation device was deployed, puncturing three of the vehicle's tires.
The vehicle came to a stop and the driver fled into nearby woods. Two occupants were arrested at the scene. With coordinated support from the CPS helicopter and RCMP Police Dog Services, the driver was located and arrested without further incident, police said.
A search of the truck yielded a rifle, bear spray, brass knuckles and illicit drugs, according to RCMP. Three individuals were arrested and charged, including two adults and one youth.
