In 2024, the RCMP recorded 235 motorcycle crashes, 37 of which occurred in May. The collisions resulted in 204 injuries, with 26 fatalities.
With the 2025 riding season underway, Alberta RCMP reminds motorists and motorcyclists to drive attentively and follow traffic laws.
"Last May saw 37 motorcycle collisions," said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. "Let’s ensure this riding season is a safe one. If you’re in a vehicle, make sure to complete a full check before turning or changing lanes to ensure smaller vehicles or motorcycles are not in your path."
In a May 5 release, RCMP issued the following tips:
-
Inspect fluids, tires, lights, signals, and chains before riding.
-
Wear a helmet that includes the date of manufacture, and use jackets, gloves, pants, boots, and eyewear designed for protection.
-
Wear high-visibility colours such as orange, yellow, or white.
-
Avoid blind spots and maintain distance from other vehicles.
-
Watch for loose gravel, sand, and debris that can reduce traction.
-
Ride cautiously on unfamiliar roads and avoid trying to match more experienced riders.
A detailed pre-ride checklist is available in Alberta Transportation’s Rider Guide.
