It was a warm and busy Saturday morning for Volunteer Airdrie as they cleaned up the ditches along the QEII within Airdrie.

Saturday was the organization's annual highway cleanup. The goal was to go from Airdrie's north city limits to the Balzac Overpass, but according to Naomi Slipp, the executive director of Volunteer Airdrie, they were unable to do that.

We had 44 very enthusiastic volunteers. We were able to get about eight kilometres in total. So we went from the North City Limits and worked towards 40th Avenue. There was a lot of garbage, particularly on the east side of the highway."

While she did not have an exact count of how many bags of garbage were picked up, Slipp believes there are around 150 bags.

"That's probably being a little conservative, because we ran out of bags a few times, and we had to get the highway guys to bring us more bags," she shared. "We could have covered probably a lot more ground if we had gone the other way (Balzac to Airdrie). But, I wanted to go where I knew the most amount of garbage was, and that's here in Airdrie."

Slipp is proud and thankful to those who helped clean up the city.

"They did an incredible job. We had a big contingent of youth from the Youth Volunteer Corps show up. They had a great time. We also had about nine people from the Airdrie Black Community show up, and they did an amazing job as well."

Volunteer Airdrie will be doing another highway cleanup on September 28, where they clean up Highway 567 west of Airdrie.
