Alberta RCMP are warning drivers to lock up after 8,272 vehicles were stolen in RCMP jurisdictions in 2024, along with 5,998 thefts from vehicles.
Mounties say 643 vehicles were stolen in May 2024 alone, with another 502 reported thefts from inside vehicles. Trucks remain the most commonly targeted vehicles.
"No one is immune to auto-related thefts, but by practicing auto theft safety, you can help prevent becoming a victim," the RCMP said in a release.
Drivers are urged to lock vehicles, close windows, and remove keys, garage openers and ID documents. Police say parking in a lit area or garage and removing valuables can deter opportunistic thieves.
