A full day of inclusive sports brought 128 Rocky View Schools (RVS) students to Genesis Place on April 30 for the division's Unified Sports Jamboree — a partnered event with Special Olympics Alberta designed to promote social inclusion through sport.
The jamboree joined people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Each athlete was paired with a neurotypical student from their school who was the same age. These teams worked together throughout the day as they played several inclusive sports.
"Events like the Unified Sports jamboree provide a structured opportunity for students who may not otherwise participate in sports to take part in athletic activities that build a sense of belonging, create meaningful interactions with others and celebrate the value of every student," said Greg Luterbach, superintendent of schools.
Teams from seven schools in Airdrie, Beiseker, Chestermere, Cochrane, Langdon, and Rocky View County competed in bocce ball, cornhole, floorball, and turbo javelin challenges.
By taking part, students who do not normally compete in sports experienced aspects of athletics including teamwork, fair play, cooperation, and communication. They also grew in their confidence and independence while strengthening their motor skills.
Middle school leadership teams from Beiseker, C.W. Perry, Kathyrn, and Langdon were involved in planning, designing, and making team posters, athlete medals, and game passports. They also led teams and games throughout the day. High school leadership teams from Bert Church High School and Horseshoe Crossing High School supported teams and games on the day.
"RVS is committed to inclusive education, and offering learning environments and opportunities that are inclusive, engaging and healthy for every student is one of the goals of our Education Plan," Luterbach said.
RVS thanked all athletes, student partners, leadership teams, and staff for making the event a "wonderful day," and acknowledged the support of Genesis Place and Special Olympics Alberta.
