Middle school students from Rocky View Schools (RVS) were in Airdrie yesterday for the eighth annual Battle of the Books at the RVS Education Centre.

At the competition, teams of middle school students answer questions and showcase their knowledge of pre-selected books (those can be seen below).

Eleven middle schools from Airdrie, Cochrane and Chestermere participated in the battle, with C.W. Perry School taking the win for a second year in a row.

Teams took turns answering questions for points, but if they were unable to correctly answer, the opposing school could earn points by providing the correct answer. The students were asked both “in the book…” and “in which book…” questions, and had to provide both the author and the title to earn points.

Kerry Kindermann, the chair of the RVS Battle of the Books committee, shared that it seemed like the kids had a fun time competing.

"To see how engaged they are as readers and how they push each other. They challenge each other in practice to get better at remembering and recalling the information from the books."

She explained it's great to see some kids who might not like sports enjoy this type of competition.

"It's great for them to be able to share their love of reading with others who have the same love of reading."

In addition to winning funds from RVS to purchase books for their learning commons, the winning team will also receive an athletics-style banner that they proudly display in their school.

The Battle of the Books will be back once again next year.
