The Whoop and Hollar Folk Festival is in its sixth year of fostering community and artistic growth in Portage la Prairie, with winter open mic nights getting ready for its summer event. Artistic Director Josh Wright highlights the festival’s role in uniting emerging and seasoned performers through free, collaborative programming.
Open mic nights spark collaboration
From January to April, the Royal Canadian Legion hosted monthly open mic and jam nights, who is also a sponsor of the evening, drawing crowds of 40 to 100 people. The events, sponsored by Badlands Promotions, Visions of Independence, and Ian’s Hardware, provided a stage for musicians, poets, and comedians while at the same time supporting local talent through donations. Sawmill Catering, a social enterprise employing people with special needs, provided food, with proceeds benefiting Visions of Independence.
Wright says, “It’s an opportunity for artists to network, build their craft, and collaborate. Whether budding or seasoned, everyone shares their work in a supportive space.”
Festival growth and recognition
The winter series culminated in a lineup announcement party for the 11th annual festival, set for August 23–24. This year’s performers include local country-rock band Linden Dr., singer-songwriter Arnie Clark, and francophone artist Roger Fournier.
Wright adds, “We’ve seen artists grow through these nights. Some start at our emerging artist venue and move to bigger stages like the Potato Festival.”

In 2023, the festival was named a finalist for Manitoba’s Event of the Year by Travel Manitoba, sharing recognition with established events like the Gimli Film Festival.
Community-driven experience
The festival attracts hundreds with its intimate, family-friendly atmosphere. Attendees enjoy main stage performances, a Red Barn acoustic venue, and a family tent with workshops. Early bird tickets are available online and at Hills Drug Store.
Wright notes, “People want a small festival where they’re close to the artists. You can talk to them from your lawn chair — that’s the magic.”
