For Emergency Preparedness Week (May 4 – 10), communities across the province are offering a variety of events and workshops on how to best be prepared for the unexpected.
This year’s theme is: Be Prepared. Know Your Risks.
Emergency Preparedness Week events focus on getting and staying informed, knowing the risks in the area, planning, gathering supplies, building an emergency kit, and making local connections.
For the week, the Town of Okotoks featured different topics to take into consideration when preparing for an emergency, such as learning about local hazards, making a unique plan that fits your lifestyle, and building an emergency kit and keeping supplies up to date.
To wrap up the week, the town is hosting an Emergency Preparedness Open House, where residents will have a chance to meet local first responders, check out the equipment, and get some hands-on safety tips.
The open house runs on May 10 from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Okotoks Rec Centre Curling Rink.
In High River, the town tested the flood gate, and its emergency sirens.
The town is also offering an Open House on May 10 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the High River Fire Hall.
Residents can meet emergency responders, learn how to build a 72-hour emergency kit and learn about wildfire safety.
