The Manitoba RCMP arrested two individuals this month for arson linked to wildfires caused by illegal burns during provincewide fire restrictions. Police warn they will enforce burning bans “strictly” to protect public safety as dry conditions persist.
Two arson cases linked to controlled burns
On May 7, a 55-year-old man from Lake Manitoba First Nation was charged after a controlled burn spread uncontrollably, igniting a 200-acre wildfire. The same day, a 46-year-old Fort Alexander man faced arson charges when his controlled burn damaged a home and destroyed a shed.
Corporal Melanie Roussel of the Manitoba RCMP stresses the severity of the incidents.
“These fires could have been prevented and should not have been started. Lives and communities are being put at risk. Our officers will strictly enforce all laws related to burning restrictions that are in place across the province—this is for the safety of all Manitobans.”

Provincewide collaboration on fire prevention
The RCMP is coordinating with Manitoba’s Emergency Management Organization, Wildlife Service, and Office of the Fire Commissioner to monitor fire risks. Current burning restrictions for municipalities are listed on the province’s wildfire prevention portal.
Roussel adds, “Ignoring bans isn’t just reckless—it’s criminal. We’re asking everyone to check local rules before burning anything, even on private property.”
