Large plumes of smoke filled the air in Kirkfiled-Westwood after a house went up in flames Saturday afternoon.

The blaze broke out just before 1:30 p.m. in a bungalow on Greenacre Boulevard near McBey Avenue.

Smoke and flames were coming from the home when crews arrived.

Strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze. Crews had it under control by 2:30 p.m.

Although no residents were home when the fire broke out, the homeowner has told us that neighbours kicked down the door before crews arrived. They were able to get two of the dogs out, but could not find the other two due to smoke.

The homeowners say that one of the dogs died in the fire, and another did not get out until approximately 90 minutes after the fire broke out. The three surviving dogs are currently in Intensive Care at the vet.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
