Spring is in full swing at La Verendrye School (LVS), and that means a busy schedule for both students and staff, according to physical education teacher Mitch Nelissen. The middle years students are currently preparing for their annual track and field day, set for May 28.
"Our kids get pretty excited for it. It's just a fun, relaxed day for them. They have to do four events and for the rest of the day they get to hang out with their friends and just chill," Nelissen said.
Track and field practices begin this week, with most training taking place during lunch hours and after school. But track isn't the only sport on the schedule — lacrosse is also making its way into the division.
"Al Patterson LVS's vice principal has brought a lacrosse program into the school division," Nelissen shared. "He's hoping to kick off with a big lacrosse day at the high school on June 20. It's something new for the kids, and he's been doing really good with it."
While spring sports are front and centre, the season brings many other events for LVS students, including swim safety lessons for the Grade 2's, zoo field trips, and graduation activities for Grade 8's. Nelissen says he and his colleagues are looking forward to summer break — but there's still lots left on the calendar.
"This is kind of my busy season," he said. "We've got track and field, then tabloid day just before the school year ends, and field trips to the splash pad. It's a lot right now, but we can see the light at the end of the tunnel."
LVS also wrapped up a successful badminton season, with strong performances in MacGregor and standout growth among the students. Looking ahead, Nelissen remains proud of the school's athletic achievements and coaching efforts, especially in girls basketball.
"Our coaching staff puts a lot of time in with the kids, and they're really receptive,” he said, giving credit to Dillon Grant, Sam Turner, and Natasha Esquivel for their leadership.
The Portage la Prairie divisional track meet is scheduled for June 4 — weather permitting — where top athletes from each school will compete.
