The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba will not be authorizing charges against an RCMP member involved in a shooting near Sanford last fall.

Police were called to a home in the R.M. of MacDonald in the evening of September 24th where it was reported that a man was assaulting a woman and burning vehicles on the property. However, the man fled before officers arrived.

Police began searching a nearby wooded area when the man emerged, armed with an edged weapon. That's when the officer discharged their firearm, striking the man in the leg. The man was brought to hospital in stable condition and later released into police custody.

The IIU was informed of the incident that same day, as it concerned serious injuries caused by the discharge of a firearm.

As a result, IIU investigators were assigned to the investigation - one subject officer and two witness officers. According to the unit, three civilian witnesses and eight professional witnesses provided statements and investigators also spoke with the affected person.

Following due consideration of all the circumstances, the civilian director will not be authorizing charges. Therefore, the IIU investigation is completed, and the matter is now closed.

As an affected person remains before the court on charges arising from the incident, the civilian director’s report on the incident will be made available once those charges are disposed.

The details of the investigation were first announced on Sept. 5, 2024.
