Update:

Highway 1 has been re-opened as of 1:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 13.

Former story:

A 54-year-old woman from the Rural Municipality of North Cypress-Langford is in hospital in stable condition after being shot by an RCMP officer during a chaotic scene on Highway 1 Monday night.

Carberry RCMP responded around 9:30 p.m. on May 12 to reports of a person creating a disturbance on the highway near Road 88 West. Multiple witnesses reported a woman walking in and out of traffic, causing vehicles to slow and stop unexpectedly.

Woman climbs onto vehicles, holds weapon

The first officer to arrive found the woman acting erratically and climbing onto vehicles in live traffic. She was armed with an edged weapon, according to RCMP.

Police say the officer tried several times to de-escalate the situation, but the woman did not respond and continued to behave unpredictably while still holding the weapon.

Officer fires after woman advances

Despite ongoing commands to drop the weapon, the woman reportedly turned and moved quickly toward the officer with the edged weapon.

"The officer then discharged his firearm," notes RCMP in a media release.

The woman was hit by the gunfire and officers immediately provided medical aid until paramedics arrived.

Body camera footage handed to watchdog

"The officer was wearing a Body Worn Camera, which was activated upon arrival at the scene," says RCMP.

"The video will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit, which has taken carriage of the officer-involved shooting investigation," adds RCMP.

Carberry RCMP are still investigating with support from Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services.

Highway 1 westbound remains closed just west of Carberry.
