Carberry RCMP called to disturbance on Highway 1, involved in shooting

Media Release - May 13, 2025

On May 12, 2025, at approximately 9:30 pm, Carberry RCMP responded to reports of an unknown person causing a disturbance on Highway 1, near Road 88 West. Multiple witnesses reported a person was walking in and out of traffic, causing traffic to slow.

The first officer to arrive on scene, witnessed a female, acting erratically and climbing up onto vehicles on the highway, while in possession of an edged weapon.

The officer made numerous attempts to de-escalate the situation, however, the female ignored the officer and continued to behave erratically while brandishing the edged weapon.

The officer approached the female, and despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, the female then turned and advanced quickly toward the officer with the edged weapon. The officer then discharged his firearm.

The female sustained a gunshot injury. Officers immediately provided medical aid until EMS arrived. The 54-year-old female, from the RM North Cypress Langford, was transported to hospital in stable condition.

The officer was wearing a Body Worn Camera, which was activated upon arrival at the scene. The video will be turned over to the Independent Investigation Unit, which has taken carriage of the officer-involved shooting investigation.

Carberry RCMP, along with officers from Manitoba RCMP Major Crime Services, continue to investigate.
