Vehicles were a common theme for the Weyburn Police Service last week, as they responded to numerous collisions and dealt with impaired drivers.

The first incident took place on May 6th, when officers saw a dirt bike driving on 4th Street. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John stated this caught the attention of officers for a few reasons.

“Dirt bike in town, no helmet, down the street, going to a restaurant to get food, impaired by alcohol, so a lot of wrongs going on there,” he told Discover Weyburn.

Officers approached the person in the restaurant, where they determined he was impaired by alcohol. He was placed under arrest and charged with impaired driving, as well as breaching conditions. The dirt bike was taken from the scene, and the driver has a later court date on the charges.

The second incident of impaired driving for the week happened in the early morning hours of May 9th. A vehicle was seen leaving a local bar, and they initiated a traffic stop.

“Early morning hours, and vehicles are going to be checked at night for sobriety,” explained St. John. “License, registration, sobriety, and this person should not have been driving. Should have taken a cab. It’s been very warm. Either walk, have a ride lined up, no reason to be driving when you’re leaving a drinking establishment.”

The driver was charged with impaired driving and was released for a future court date.

Another incident, not involving alcohol, took place on May 9th as well. St. John said it all came about when trying to move a trailer that was loaded up so another vehicle could get out.

“A little mishap occurred,” St. John detailed. “There were no brakes that were working on that trailer as well, and they were not able to stop going forward, and did hit another house. No injuries, but it shows that importance of always having really good trailer brakes and being very careful with what you’re doing if you’re not used to driving a bigger vehicle with a lot of weight on it.”

St. John is reminding motorists to also pay attention to their surroundings and be aware of what is in front of them, as there were tickets handed out for driving without due care and attention on two separate occasions over the past week.
