On May 10, 2025, the Austin Fire Department responded to two separate fire calls within just hours of each other, as dry conditions and high winds continue to pose a significant wildfire risk in the region.

At 1:14 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to Road 70W and 69N for a report of a tractor on fire in a cultivated field. When crews arrived, they found the farm tractor fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters pulled hoses from both Alpha 1 and Alpha 2 units to attack the blaze and extinguish it.

Less than two hours later, at 2:55 p.m., firefighters had just returned to the hall when they were paged again—this time for a grass fire along Road 67N, approximately 1.5 miles west of Highway 34. The fire had been caused by a downed powerline and was burning in the north ditch. Fortunately, despite the wind and dry conditions, it had not spread far. Crews quickly brought it under control.

Fire ban remains in effect

In response to ongoing fire risk, the Municipality of North Norfolk has implemented a burn ban. While contained or enclosed fire pits are still permitted, anyone found violating the burn ban may be subject to penalties or fines.

Residents are urged to follow all guidelines to help prevent wildfires and ensure public safety.
