Rocky View Schools has released its second feature on why RVS conducts assessments.

According to the school division, when students are assessed provincially, results are reported as intervention required/not required.

"Interventions take many forms and look different from student to student and subject to subject. In achieving our vision of students achieving their absolute best, RVS teachers and specialists work to find out which types of interventions will best assist each student."

RVS uses a combination of one-on-one and small group targeted literacy intervention, direct instruction and full class instruction to help students develop literacy skills, explained the school division.

"The use of supporting resources such as Heggerty, Phonics Companion, Secret Stories, Words Their Way and resources through the University of Florida Literacy Institute (UFLI) provides teachers with knowledge to deepen their literacy instruction to better support students. Including professionals such as learning specialists, speech language pathologists and occupational therapists to assist teachers with their practices is also beneficial."

RVS also provides classroom teachers with resources to support students, ensuring they have the materials needed to carry out effective literacy interventions.

When it comes to math interventions, teachers and students have access to materials like math manipulatives, numeracy-rich literature, digital platforms such as Mathology and math games.

"These interventions could also include teachers building engaging opportunities for students to work more directly and authentically with their numeracy learning; students working in groups and individually using white boards to show their understanding; and students receiving small group intervention or one-on-one intervention to support math skill development."

RVS also shared that if you are concerned about your child's performance when it comes to these assessments, you can reach out to their teacher.

"Together, you can identify ways for you to support your child using similar approaches and strategies that the classroom teacher is using. Being a united team in supporting your child offers them greater opportunities as we work together to ensure every child succeeds."
