Nathan Peto, CEO of Southport Aerospace Centre, accepted the Manitoba Chamber of Commerce’s Future Champions Award on May 12, citing the organization’s dual focus on economic growth and social responsibility. The award, presented at Winnipeg’s Club Regent Event Centre, honors businesses driving innovation in Manitoba.
Balancing profit and purpose
Peto notes the recognition reflects Southport’s 30-year legacy.
“The Future Champions Award is for businesses that make outstanding economic and social impacts,” he says. “Those two things align with what Southport does and our vision and values.”
The not-for-profit, which manages the former Canadian Forces Base Portage la Prairie, reported $210 million in regional economic impact in 2022. A 2025 study is expected to show further growth.

Investing in people and place
Southport reinvests a portion of profits into local initiatives, contributing over $100,000 annually to community projects.
“It’s hard to find an event here we don’t support,” Peto adds. “Our team volunteers, donates, and partners wherever needed.”
The campus employs 540 staff and generates $40 million in labor income. Partnerships with institutions like Red River College Polytechnics’ aviation program underscore its workforce development role.
Preparing for takeoff
Upcoming projects include a June 12 building dedication honouring former CEO Peggy May and a new alliance with Manitoba First Nations Police. Peto emphasizes continuity:
“Our next 25 years will build on military aviation roots while expanding training, housing, and green infrastructure.”
The Manitoba Chamber named Southport among 10 awardees, praising its blend of aerospace innovation and community stewardship. With a 24-hour airfield and 214 housing units, the site remains a hub for both commerce and residential growth.
Portage chamber applauds Southport’s provincial economic leadership
Stefanie Dunn, executive director of the Portage and District Chamber of Commerce, praises Southport Aerospace Centre’s Manitoba Future Champions Award win, calling the organization a regional economic cornerstone.
Green innovation and regional growth
Dunn notes Southport’s new office building exemplifies its progressive vision.
“It is designed in such an important way, and really thoughtfully designed to use green energy,” she says.
The chamber highlights Southport’s role in job creation and sector diversification.
“They are a huge pillar of our community in terms of economic impact,” Dunn adds.
Championing local talent
Dunn emphasizes the need to showcase regional innovation.
“It’s time we acknowledge the amazing talent and innovation we have here. Southport is very deserving of this award.”
The chamber plans to amplify awareness of Southport’s contributions, including its $210 million annual economic output and partnerships with local groups. Dunn concludes:
“We love to get Portage on that stage anytime we can.”
