Friends and family of a couple who lost their home and one of their four dogs to a fire over the weekend are rallying together to help the pair through this difficult time.

The fire broke out just before 1:30 p.m. on Saturday in a bungalow on Greenacre Boulevard near McBey Avenue.

Smoke and flames were pouring from the home when firefighters arrived.

Strong winds made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze. However, crews were able to get it under control by 2:30 p.m.

Although no residents were home when the fire broke out, neighbours kicked down the door before crews arrived. They were able to get two of their four dogs out, but could not find the others due to the smoke.

One of the dogs died in the fire, and another did not get out until 90 minutes after the fire started.

All three dogs were placed in Intensive Care at the vet, and the bills for their care have grown exponentially.

To help with this, a GoFundMe has been created by one of the family's good friends.

"I am asking for your help to help get them through this because the financial strain is going to be hard," said Troy Owens. "They have also lost everything they own and have to start over."

Owens says the couple was insured but there are a lot of expenses to deal with before they get anything back.

"Anything you can donate will be appreciated."

All donations over the vet expenses will be donated to the rescue where they got the dog that passed away in the fire.
