Rain or shine, farmers are always on the grind! We were able to take some delicious Boston Pizza out to Jesse Watson and his family with our Great Plains Ford Feed N Seed!
Watson and his family are working hard in the field seeding canola out near Yellow Grass trying to beat the rain and possibly snow incoming this May long weekend. They farm roughly 9000 acres of durum, canola, and red lentils.
Seeding is coming along for the Watson crew as Jesse states, “We got to be about a third of the way done I would say, just kind of a random guess. We're done our durum anyway.” They are now working on planting canola before the next few days of rain halts production.
The Watson’s are appreciative of the upcoming rain as are most farmers looking to get a good start for their crops. It’s always a double-edged sword with rain during the seeding season as the moisture is necessary for a good start, but you never want to stop planting, especially when time is of the essence.
What no farmer wants at this time of year is cold weather and possibly snow. With the small seedlings at their most vulnerable state, a frost or snow event could hurt or even kill the upcoming crop forcing farmers to replant, something that costs too much time and money.
The Watson’s are hoping the mercury stays above zero, the rain stays in its liquid form, and things can keep on rolling as we’re in the middle of May. One thing that’s definitely piping hot though were the Boston Pizza pizzas they enjoyed!
