Okotoks town council approved the Downtown Area Redevelopment Plan at its May 12 meeting.

Developed using concepts from previous town plans and extensive community feedback, the plan will guide the gradual redevelopment of the downtown core over several years.

It places emphasis on maintaining a walkable environment, preserving the area’s character, encouraging diverse housing options, and nurturing a vibrant economy.

That includes improving accessibility for pedestrians of all mobility levels, including cyclists, while also recommending regular reviews of parking availability to ensure there are sufficient spaces for drivers.

Community engagement played a key role in shaping the plan, particularly in the desire to retain Okotoks’ small-town feel.

The plan divides downtown Okotoks into four “character areas”: the Elma Street West historical area, the Maple residential area, Main Street and the Riverfront. Each area is assigned its own design guidelines intended to preserve its unique character.

“This plan reflects the community’s aspirations and lays the groundwork for a thriving downtown that is welcoming, accessible and vibrant,” said Mayor Tanya Thorn in a media release from the town. “By approving the Downtown ARP, we are committing to thoughtful, inclusive development that enhances quality of life and supports long-term prosperity.”
