With the long weekend upon us, many Portagers may be looking for ways to spend time with friends, family, loved ones, or by themselves.

We've compiled a list of activities for this May long weekend that you and yours can enjoy.

#1: Relive history at a local museum

The Fort la Reine museum is opening this weekend, and new this season is the CPR Rail Exhibit, located in the Visitor Centre.

The exhibit came to be with the help of the local CPR Heritage Station, and delves into the wealth of history behind the railways that helped bring our region to life.

The Austin museum is also open all weekend, with construction having recently finished on a new roofing system for their tree planting car, and their "Quilt Week" continuing through until Sunday.

#2: Take a swim, or a gander, at Stride Place and the Portage Farmer's Market

You can cool off (or warm up) with a swim at Stride Place, which is offering free public swimming in the Shindleman Aquatic Centre, this Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to 6 p.m, and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

You can also take a gander at local goods from local vendors at the Portage Farmer's Market, which you can find in the main hall of Stride Place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday.

Stride Place will be closed on Monday.

#3: Dry off by a campfire, and take part in local fishing

With recent rainfall, some RMs are lifting burn bans that have been in place due to previous dry, arid weather, meaning if you're going camping, you might have the opportunity to sit back and enjoy toasting some hot dogs and marshmellos after all.

You can find out if your RM has a burn ban currently in place by clicking here.

You can also get hooked on the May Long 2025 Fishing Derby at Sportsman's Corner Campground. Cash prizes are up for grabs, and proceeds from the event are going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, supporting Manitoba's Sick Children.

You can find more info on the fishing derby by clicking here.

#4: Take in a show (or two!) at the Herman Prior Centre

The Herman Prior Centre has two different shows going on this May Long Weekend filled with local and cultural performances.

Their Music Show features artists like Johnny Dietrich and Kickin' Up Dust, Northern Reflections, the Sharpe Sisters, along with Jimmy and Ryan, and doors open at 1:30 this Sunday.

Along with that, Monday brings a performance from The Prairie Cloggers at 6:30, who are presenting their Spring Windup, an opportunity for folks to take in some entertaining dances, see what they do, and consider joining up when they start back up in the fall.

Both events can be found on the Pharmasave Portage Community Events Calendar.

#5: Gardening and Garages(ales)

Sometimes it's better to stay close to home, and if that's you this weekend, Our Farm Farmhouse, as well as the Canadian Tire Garden Centre can help you get started on your spring planting - once all the rain dies down - getting you equipped to start flexing your green thumb all season long.

If you don't mind getting a bit wet, or have an umbrella, you might also consider checking out local garage sales. Who knows? You might find that perfect something for yourself or someone you know.

You can check out the Garage Sale Junkie page by clicking here to find garage sales near you all throughout the next few months.

Honorable mentions

In spite of the cold and wet weather that's expected this weekend, things do look to be improving for Sunday and Monday, judging by the Kitson's Towing Local Weather Page.

Because of this, you might also consider getting a head start at preparing for Bike Week, which takes place from May 24th until May 30th, utilizing the bike paths that are now installed along roads throughout the Portage area.

Haven't heard about bike week yet? We've got you covered.
