Two local bursaries are helping Portage District General Hospital staff and their families take the next step in healthcare education, with applications open now and a fast-approaching deadline.
The Bailes Bursary is open to staff or their immediate family members, while the Roberta’s Dream Bursary supports hospital employees pursuing university-level healthcare programs.
Tara Pettinger, executive director of the Portage District General Hospital Foundation, says the bursaries offer meaningful support to those looking to advance their careers in the healthcare field.
"We have the Doctor Michelle Bailes Bursary and the Roberta Dream Bursary available. So, all their criteria and the applications are available on our website, and it's a good opportunity for existing staff or family members of a staff member to apply."

The Dr. Michelle Bailes Fund was created in memory of a respected member of the local medical community known for her generosity, passion for patient care, and dedication to the foundation. The fund provides an annual bursary to a Portage hospital staff member or their family member pursuing further education in a healthcare-related field.
Since its establishment in 2019, the fund has awarded more than $74,000, helping support the next generation of healthcare professionals.
The Roberta’s Dream Bursary, established by retired nurse and former foundation executive director Roberta Linette, was inspired by her own experience receiving financial aid during her studies. It offers funding for current hospital staff members enrolled in a recognized Baccalaureate, Master’s, or Doctoral program in healthcare. Applicants must have at least one year of full-time service at the Portage hospital. Launched in 2023, the fund has already supported three recipients in pursuing advanced healthcare education.
"It’s a good opportunity for people looking at continuing education in the healthcare field, and we’re proud to support growth and learning within our hospital community."
