The City of Airdrie is urging residents to register to vote ahead of the 2025 municipal election, citing new provincial requirements under Bill 20.

Online registration is open at airdrie.ca/registertovote and will close Sept. 14. Residents can also register in person while voting between Oct. 8 and 20.

"Taking five minutes now to get on the voters’ list as a first-time voter, update existing voter information or checking if a resident is registered to vote helps saves our residents time during the election," said Noshy Karbani, the city’s project lead for census and municipal elections.

According to the city, the requirement for a voters list came with the passing of Bill 20. Airdrie is required to maintain a voters list under the legislation passed by the Alberta government.

"The 2025 Airdrie Municipal Election will be significantly different from previous elections," said Charlotte Satink, the city’s returning officer. "Due to Bill 20, we are now required to maintain a voters’ list. We must also hand count each paper ballot cast during the election, resulting in more time required for delivering the results," she said.

"That, combined with Airdrie’s at-large representation system (meaning no ward system), makes this election very complex requiring a lot of additional hands to count, and we will be looking to hire a lot more election workers starting in June," she said.

The 2025 election includes races for mayor, six city councillors, and Ward 3 trustees for the Rocky View School Board. The Calgary Catholic School Division trustee election will be administered by Elections Calgary using Airdrie voting stations.
