The second phase of the City of Moose Jaw's Safe Routes project is set to get underway this week, and residents will soon be seeing posted speed limits in playgrounds across the city be reduced to 30km/h.

The new speed limits will come into effect once signage has been changed, and like school zone speed limits—reduced to 30km/h in Phase 1 in 2024—the limits will be active year-round from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week.

Speeds will be adjusted in a total of 18 playground zones in Moose Jaw, the first being Kiwaniland Park playground, with the remaining nine sports fields, green spaces and four (soon to be closed) South Hill school locations receiving updated 'playground ahead' warning signage only.

A grace period lasting until 11:59 p.m. on June 20, 2025, will be offered by the Moose Jaw Police Service before tickets are issued, allowing residents to acclimate to new posted speeds. However, warnings will be issued, within reason, and motorists are expected to be aware of, and comply with, new speed limits once the signs are installed.

The project was approved by city council during a regular meeting on April 28, 2025, and the completion of the Safe Routes project is part of the larger goal of aligning Moose Jaw with national standards set by the Transportation Association of Canada.
