The City of Airdrie recently announced that Airdronians will see some savings when it comes to waste and recycling rates.

According to the city, Airdrie households will save $3.08 per bill, due to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program.

Steven Rice, the team leader for waste and recycling services for the City of Airdrie, explained that this program is a provincial initiative.

"This program applies to all municipalities in the province. Other provinces have programs like this in place."

The City of Airdrie stated that the EPR "shifts the costs of recycling programs from municipalities to producers of products we purchase".

Traditionally, the municipalities have paid for those programs, for those materials to be recycled, and the costs of those programs have been passed on to the residents, shared Rice.

"One of the main goals of the program is to encourage the producers to package their materials in packaging that can be recycled. So less is going to the landfill, more is recycled."

According to the provincial government, Alberta’s EPR empowers producers to:

  • Create local recycling markets and improve community access
  • Design cost-effective and efficient recycling programs
  • Demonstrate environmental responsibility

A portion of the new revenue will be used to help fund future expenses for the black cart program set to launch in Airdrie in 2026.
