After a few clouds and light showers early this week, Portage la Prairie is in for a long stretch of sunshine and steadily warming temperatures, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

A warm and dry pattern

Meteorologist Shannon Moody says the cloud cover on Wednesday is expected to clear out by the evening, with mainly sunny skies taking over through the weekend and into next week.

“We have some cloud today that's going to linger. Maybe a few light sprinkles here and there, but that's going to clear out through this evening. And then it's just going to be quite sunny. Temperatures are going to be very nice, around 20°. Then it looks like next week, things will be warming up even more, quite hot,” Moody notes.

The clear skies are expected to continue well beyond the weekend.

The forecast shows sunny days from Thursday through Tuesday, with daytime highs climbing from 19°C to 29°C by the middle of next week.

“It is a long ways out, so things certainly can change, but yes, it does look like it'll stick around through the work week,” Moody adds.

Frost risk fading, but caution still urged

Overnight lows are expected to stay just slightly below normal over the next few days.

With temperatures around 4°C to 5°C, gardeners are being reminded to keep an eye on sensitive plants.

“If people have done some planting, be cautious and maybe cover them up. You don't want to wake up and have a little surprise,” Moody continues.

Though there was a frost advisory over the past weekend, Moody says that isn’t unusual for this time of year.

The seasonal averages for the area are a high of 22°C and a low of 8°C.
