Airdrie’s Chinook Winds spray park opens for the season Friday, just as forecasts predict the city could hit 27°C early next week.
"The spray park will open for the season on Friday, May 23," the City of Airdrie stated on its website.
Environment Canada, in its Airdrie-specific forecast issued Wednesday, is calling for a high of 24°C on Sunday, followed by 27°C on both Monday and Tuesday. The agency shows a steady climb beginning Saturday, with rising UV levels and no precipitation expected.
The Weather Network’s Airdrie outlook for May 22–27 also shows Tuesday reaching 26°C, with mainly sunny skies, low humidity, and light winds.
The warm stretch follows a soggy May long weekend and days of single-digit highs. For Wednesday, Environment Canada put the chance of afternoon showers at 60 per cent, with the risk of a thunderstorm. Winds were expected from the northwest at 20 km/h, gusting to 40. The high was 10°C, with an overnight low of –1°C.
On Thursday, Environment Canada calls for a high of 13°C under a mix of sun and cloud. The Weather Network adds the possibility of fog patches early in the morning, with partly sunny conditions later in the day. It places the high at 14°C with southeast wind gusts up to 38 km/h and a 30 per cent chance of showers.
Friday’s outlook remains partly cloudy, with highs near 16°C. The Weather Network includes a 40 per cent chance of a late-day shower, though total precipitation is expected to remain under 1 mm.
Saturday’s high is forecast at 19°C, with 24°C expected Sunday and 27°C on both Monday and Tuesday. Overnight lows will also increase, reaching 11°C by Monday night.
The Chinook Winds spray park is located at 2853 Chinook Winds Drive SW, inside a fenced area at Chinook Winds Regional Park. According to the city, amenities include ground sprays, two twist n’ spill water toys, a splash blaster spiral, an interactive tappin’ tunes piano, a discovery stream, toddler water table, four slides, 12 picnic tables, shade, and public washrooms and change rooms.
Two regional long-range forecasts support the short-term trend.
The Farmers’ Almanac predicts "clearing skies" and "pleasant weather" from May 20 to 23 across the Prairies, followed by "unsettled weather" from May 24 to 27, and "mostly fair skies" to close the month.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac calls for "showers, very warm east; thunderstorms, warm west" from May 22 to 31. It estimates May’s average temperature in the eastern Prairies at 12.5°C — about 3°C above normal — and forecasts below-average precipitation in the east.
