The Bert Church High School Senior Band recently competed at the national band competition and received a silver rating.
Silver is the second-highest rating a band can get, only behind gold.
Corbie Dorner, the music and band director and the high school talked about the experience.
"There were nerves, I just tried to make sure they focused on me and we performed, and I thought they did an incredible job."
Dorner shared how the band was able to attend nationals.
"At the Alberta Band Associations, Festival of Bands in Red Deer last May, we received a superior rating, which is the highest rating you can get in that particular festival. The director of that festival put our name forward to nationals to receive the invitation to participate."
The pieces the band performed at nationals included:
- Mystery on Mena Mountain – Julie Giroux-West
- Portrait of Terry Fox – Q. H. Le
- Energy! – Adrian B. Sims

"None of us was bigger than the band. They (the students) should all be proud of their work."
Jackson Jacobi from Bert Church was the recipient of a National “Honour Award” for this year’s event.
Dorner concluded by saying he hopes the Bert Church band will be able to attend nationals once again in the coming years.
