The Steinbach Sabres football program rolled into Grant Park on a gorgeous May afternoon with 95 players strong for a JV and Varsity double header vs the Pirates.
The JV Sabres jumped out to a 16-8 halftime lead. Grant Park responded with a strong 2nd half taking the lead 38-16 before the Sabres rallied late and closed the gap before ultimately losing 38-30.
Roran Robertshaw connected on 2 big TD passes to Kaynen Hruda and Tyler Penner.
Tyler Penner added a huge TD run on the ground. Grade 8 QB Jace Hiebert connected on a short pop pass to fellow grade 8 Sedrick Kauenhofen who hit the jets for a 45 yard TD. Myles Falk added a few big catches to move the chains.
Braeden Sinclair also scored a rushing TD in the game.
The Defense was anchored by Silas Reimer, Shane Olson and Axl Carganillo who recorded a bunch of tackles, while Axl also recorded an interception.
The Varsity Sabres fell behind early and trailed 20-8 at half. Some costly penalties kept 1 major off the board and forced a few punts. But then the offensive line absolutely dominated the game in the 2nd half leading them to a 40-26 win. Unofficial estimates say Wade Anderson rushed for 400-450 yards and 4 tds.
Let's take this moment to thank the Hoggies for their dedication who rarely get the shoutout. Eric Barnard. Matt Giesbrecht. Koren Letkman. Ryder Wallace. Regan Barkman. Logan Goertzen. Tim Peters.
Angelo Stoyanov connected with Wade Anderson on a 20 yard catch and run.
Dylan Godlewski, Seth Friesen and Blake Doerksen controlled the defense making the majority of the tackles.
The Varsity Sabres have one more week of camp and have a jamboree next week at Princess Auto Stadium vs Grant Park, Oak Park, and Vincent Massey.
