Airdrie residents should expect pool closures and parking disruptions at Genesis Place this summer as the City completes two major maintenance projects.
In a May 23 update, the City confirmed it will undertake biennial aquatics maintenance and repave the west Fitness Centre parking lot — timing both during what it says is the facility’s lowest period of use.
All pools and aquatics amenities will be fully closed from Aug. 22 to Sept. 12. Service is scheduled to resume at 7 a.m. on Sept. 13.
The dive tank will close first, from June 24 through Sept. 12. The lane pool follows, closing July 1 through Sept. 12. The leisure pool and all remaining aquatics features will shut down during the final three weeks of the maintenance period.
Work includes refinishing tile in the dive tank and lane pool, grout repairs in the leisure basin, new acoustic panels, and upgraded lighting.
The Fitness Centre parking lot — running from the Arena entrance to the Aquatics entrance — will face intermittent closures between June 25 and Aug. 10. The Aquatics drop-off zone and accessible stalls will also be affected.
Parking will remain available at the Field House, Bert Church Theatre, and North Arenas lots. The Arenas entrance will stay open throughout.
Continuous passholders have the option to pause their Genesis Place pass during the pool shutdown. A paused pass suspends access to all amenities and will automatically reactivate Sept. 13.
The City said it schedules large-scale projects during the summer months to limit disruption during busier times. In its May 23 update, the City stated, "This maintenance work allows us to keep the pool healthy now and for years to come."
Families looking to cool off have another option. The Chinook Winds Spray Park opened Friday, May 23, at 2853 Chinook Winds Drive SW. It operates daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The reopening comes as Airdrie heads into a stretch of summer heat. Forecasted highs include 26°C on Monday, 24°C on Tuesday, 27°C on Wednesday, and 29°C on Thursday. Environment Canada has issued a UV index of 7, or high, for the week ahead.
