Summit Trails Online High School's Valedictorian this year is Jennifer Dumanovski.

She is excited to garner the role and was not expecting it at all.

"I wasn't even thinking of applying until my guidance counsellor brought it up and asked why I didn't apply, as I had high enough grades."

Dumanovski explained that she had to fill out a form, get a letter of recommendation from a teacher and write an essay on why she thought she was suitable for the role.

"A former math teacher wrote the letter for me. When he was my teacher, we liked to talk about math problems and things like that. It explained that I was patient, persistent, determined, and always exceeded expectations in my schoolwork."

Dumanovski explained why she decided to go to an online high school.

"I was surprised as to how many kids I was able to relate to there. One student I became friends with online, and we had we shared the same music taste, we liked the same author."

The high school's graduation ceremony took place on May 21 at Bert Church LIVE Theatre. She went on to share what her message was to her fellow classmates.

"Just because I have this title, it doesn't necessarily mean that I've achieved success or anything. It's being with the people you care about and just enjoying life, that's success."

Before going to Summit Trails for online schooling, Dumanovski was homeschooled, and public school was not the right fit for her.

After high school, she plans on attending the University of Calgary for Engineering.

She concluded by thanking those who have helped her along the way and chose her to be Valedictorian.
