At the latest Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees made some changes to the 2025/26 school calendar.
According to RVS, the changes to the calendar are to accommodate Kindergarten students better and to provide options intended to decrease the anxiety some students may experience over the start of the school year.
These changes will apply to all school calendars moving forward:
- Two three-way child-parent-teacher Kindergarten conference days will be held, one in the fall and one in the spring, for all RVS schools.
- Full-day, alternating-day Kindergarten was approved for five schools: Cochrane Christian Academy, Indus School, Langdon School, Kathyrn School and Westbrook School.
- All RVS schools can choose to adopt staggered entry for the start of the school year. Part of the student body will begin school on September 2, with the remainder beginning on September 3. This practice has been shown to decrease the stress that can accompany the start of the school year due to fewer students being in class/school.
Last week, the 2025/26 operating budget was approved by the Board of Trustees.
According to RVS, most of the $344.5 million budget will go directly to schools in areas such as classroom and school staffing; numeracy, literacy, career learning and inclusion supports; Indigenous knowledge-building; technology and school-based supplies and resources.
RVS is expecting to welcome 500 new students in September. To support rising enrollments and diversity, as well as the complexities in classrooms, RVS announced that 90 percent of instructional dollars will be allocated directly to schools, with the remaining funds managed centrally to support schools and their staff.
The division shared that they remain focused on strengthening numeracy and literacy skills by providing schools with direct staffing for these targeted areas in elementary schools, with additional support from learning specialists, along with dedicated specialists in English as an Additional Language and Indigenous Learning.
