Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta held a fundraising event yesterday and the rest of this week in the Bayview neighbourhood to mark the continuation of construction on 11 new affordable homes in Airdrie.

The nonprofit group, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, aims to unite the neighbourhood and support families in achieving affordability and self-sufficiency through affordable homeownership.

Cam Heke, vice president of community engagement for Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta, explained that all week, they have had a number of volunteers helping build the homes.

"Home ownership has become very difficult for regular families, and so what we do is we help these families into affordable home ownership, and we do that by bringing the entire community together on days like today, where we have a stream of volunteers."

He shared that these families have manageable mortgages where there's no down payment, there's no interest, and their payments are capped at 30 per cent.

"What's also wonderful about this is all of those payments through the habitat mortgages, they all seed the next build. So we're in perpetuity, being able to continuously create new housing across southern Alberta."

Heke explained that it's so meaningful to see so many people spend their time here on this building site, creating these 11 homes.

"As somebody who lives in Airdrie, it's incredible. When people ask, What do you do for a living? I get to say, I work with Habitat for Humanity, I get to help build brighter futures for families, and it's just wonderful."

He concluded by thanking everybody who makes this possible and all the volunteers who are working on the homes.

In 2024, Habitat’s building program consisted of nearly $14 million in affordable homes. Since 1990, Habitat for Humanity Southern Alberta have partnered with 392 families across Southern Alberta, affecting the lives of more than 1,181 children.
