Northwestern Ontario residents can expect this week’s cold temperatures to settle down later in the month.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Steven Flisfeder says temperatures in December are expected to be colder than usual until the middle of the month, where the region will start to warm up.

“It’s going to start on the cooler end, below seasonal for the next week or so, especially into next week. Once we get into mid-December, temperatures will return to that above seasonal range,” he said.

Ordinarily, December’s daytime highs are around -9 degrees in the region. Flisfeder says we could see temperatures around freezing or -2 degrees, with normal amounts of preciptation, by the middle of the month.

He adds it was a snowier than usual November. The Kenora Airport recorded 41 centimeters of snow last month, up from the average of 32.2 cm for November.
