A local farm family is asking for the public’s help after 41 cows and their calves went missing from their pastureland near the North Portal Grid Road, south of Highway 18 in the Frobisher/Hirsch area.
Amy and Slade Mutton, who operate a small family farm in the area, say the cattle likely went missing sometime in the last one to two weeks. The animals are a mix of red and black cows, all branded with S-M.
The Muttons believe the cattle were stolen.
“This is absolutely devastating to our small, family-owned farm,” said Amy Mutton in a public post on social media. “Please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity and report it to the RCMP. A reward will be given to anyone who provides information leading to the safe return of our cattle and calves.”
An RCMP investigation is underway. A provincial brand inspector has also notified livestock officials across neighbouring provinces and U.S. border states in case the cattle are moved out of Saskatchewan.
Many people have responded to the Muttons’ call for help, commenting on social media that they are keeping an eye out at auctions and in their own pastures. Several have reported notifying brand inspectors and cattle auctions in nearby provinces and states.
The family says they’re deeply grateful for the support and urge others to stay vigilant.
What to watch for:
-
Unfamiliar trailers or vehicles near pasture gates and back roads
-
Cattle with S-M brands being sold or moved unexpectedly
-
New or unidentified herds appearing in local fields
Anyone with information is asked to contact their local RCMP detachment immediately.
Photos of the missing animals are expected to be shared soon.
In the meantime, the Muttons are urging fellow producers and rural residents to keep a close eye on their own herds and report anything unusual.
