Airdrie-East MLA Angela Pitt has been appointed to Alberta's "Alberta First" cabinet policy committee, one of four cabinet policy committees named by Premier Danielle Smith on Monday.
Pitt, named in the Alberta First committee list with Premier Danielle Smith and other ministers, was among those appointed to the committee. The committee is chaired by Athabasca-Barrhead-Westlock MLA Glenn van Dijken.
Other members include Premier Smith, Finance Minister Nate Horner, Energy and Minerals Minister Brian Jean, Justice Minister Mickey Amery, Environment and Protected Areas Minister Rebecca Schulz, Jobs Minister Joseph Schow, Associate Water Minister Grant Hunter, and Red Deer-South MLA Jason Stephan.
According to a May 26 Government of Alberta news release, the cabinet policy committees are tasked with "reviewing policy decisions, setting long-range strategic priorities and contributing to proposals and reviews of legislation and regulation."
The announcement also confirmed Stephan's appointment as Parliamentary Secretary for Constitutional Affairs, a new position created May 21.
"I want to welcome Jason to his new role, and I look forward to his contributions on this important file," Premier Smith stated in the release.
"I am committed to standing up for Alberta and ensuring our constitutional rights are respected and upheld," Stephan stated. "The Constitution of Canada is to provide a check and balance against abuse of power by government and protect Alberta from destructive overreach by the federal government."
Stephan added: "I look forward to working with Premier Smith and my colleagues to support the proper use of the Constitution to protect Alberta, to produce freedom and prosperity for Alberta families and individuals."
Pitt's appointment to the Alberta First committee comes less than two weeks after she represented Alberta in San Antonio, Texas, at a National Conference of State Legislatures event focused on energy and trade.
In a written statement to Discover Airdrie on May 15, Pitt said she intended to "advance Alberta priorities and interests, including trade, investment, energy security and critical trade infrastructure."
"I will promote Alberta's energy resources as a means of supplying U.S. energy security, affordability and prosperity," she wrote. Pitt also raised concerns about "the potential impacts of tariffs that affect trade flows."
Pitt's San Antonio mission, from May 15 to 17, included bilateral meetings with U.S. state legislators, energy policy roundtables, and sessions with the organization's Executive Committee. Alberta joined the NCSL as an affiliate member in 2024.
The four cabinet policy committees named Monday include Alberta First, Building Communities, Economic Development, and Public Safety and Wellness. Each combines ministers and MLAs.
No other MLAs from the Airdrie region were named in Monday's announcement. Peter Guthrie, the MLA for Airdrie-Cochrane, now sits as an Independent.
Guthrie resigned as Minister of Infrastructure on Feb. 25. His expulsion from the UCP caucus was confirmed on April 16, following his public criticism of the government's handling of the Alberta Health Services procurement investigation.
