An Airdrie man says he and his partner are finally ready to get married after a $1-million LOTTO MAX win earlier this month.
"We’ve been engaged for 12 years, and now we can actually plan a wedding," said Jack Puglas, who matched one of the MAXMILLIONS prizes on the May 6 draw.
Puglas said he was making coffee when he scanned his ticket with the Lotto Spot app and couldn’t believe what he saw.
"I scanned it a few times before I went to wake my fiancé up," he said. "She scanned it on her phone too and then we went to the [Circle K] to see if it was real!"
The ticket — bought at the Circle K on 1 Avenue NW in Airdrie — was the only MAXMILLIONS winner for that draw, according to the Western Canada Lottery Corporation. The winning numbers were 10, 16, 18, 24, 35, 36, and 41.
"[My fiancé and I] are so filled with emotions," he said. "We purchased our first house just a month ago and now we can pay it off and start on renovating it!"
Puglas added that part of the money will be set aside for their children’s education.
"We’ll also put some money away for our kids’ school," he said. "I bought the ticket while I was picking up Slurpees for my kids while they were at soccer practice — so they’re part of this too."
He said the couple’s children are handling the news with surprising discretion.
"The kids are actually doing a better job of keeping the win quiet than we are," he said.
With their mortgage nearly gone and a wedding finally in sight, Puglas said the win is more than just a financial boost.
"We can set a date!" he said.
