An Airdrie teacher, Alexis Crich, is fundraising for school supplies for students in Guatemala.
Crich explained she will be visiting the country for a few weeks with the organization called Change for Children.
"I get to head over there in July and help out with the teachers and bring some school supplies to the children there."
A total of five travelling teachers will support Guatemalan educators in learning how to use their available technology effectively for teaching.
"The new technology provides easy access to resources and reference materials for students and teachers who have little or no access to the internet or physical libraries. They can also create and upload additional materials to share in their school and beyond," stated the Change for Children website.
Last weekend, her oldest child held a lemonade sale to support their mom in her journey. While they were able to raise a few funds, they do plan on hosting another soon.
"Super proud of him to put me in the picture and support me in this endeavour that I'm going on this summer. He has a little brother who's four years old now, and so he was super excited to sell the lemonade."
Currently, around $500 has been raised with a goal of $2,000. If you would like to contribute, click HERE.
"The Alberta Teachers Association put a call out in January, if any teachers in Alberta would be interested in spending two weeks of their summer volunteering in Guatemala with the organization, and I put my application in."
She went on to talk about why she wanted to go on this trip.
"I want to see what education is throughout the world. I love to be able to inspire and impact communities, and to be able to do that where it looks very different will be fun."
While Crich is nervous about the journey, she is excited to spend some time in a different country and see what their education is all about.
"I'll miss my family, but I think my husband can hold down the fort for those two weeks while I'm gone."
