As wildfires continue to affect communities in Northern Manitoba, Portage la Prairie is doing its part by opening an emergency evacuation centre at the Portage Curling Rink.
With help from the Manitoba Emergency Measures Organization, the space has been set up to hold up to 325 people, complete with cots and basic supplies.
The Canadian Red Cross is overseeing the shelter, with support from provincial security staff to ensure everything goes smoothly.
Several busloads of evacuees registered in Winnipeg with about 230 people arriving in Portage Thursday evening.
Anyone wishing to help or donate is encouraged to contact the Canadian Red Cross directly for details.
Those wishing to bring donations are being asked not to at the moment, so as to not overload the workers.
