Airdrie’s heat warning has ended, as temperatures are forecast to drop by more than 15 degrees compared to yesterday and the coming days.

Environment Canada lifted the advisory early Friday after the temperature reached 30.0°C on Thursday, according to data from Calgary International Airport.

Friday’s high is expected to reach 25°C under sunny skies, followed by 28°C on Saturday with gusting south winds near 50 km/h. Overnight Saturday, the temperature is forecast to fall to 4°C with a 60 per cent chance of showers.

Daytime highs on Sunday and Monday are expected to remain at 15°C, with overnight lows dipping to 2°C. Seasonal norms for the region are 18°C during the day and 5°C overnight. Environment Canada projects a return to near-normal temperatures by mid-week.

However, wildfire risk remains either extreme or high in much of the province.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Calgary Forest Area was under a "very high" wildfire danger rating, according to Alberta Wildfire. Officials said heat, wind and limited precipitation have increased the risk of fast-growing fires with erratic behaviour.

A fire advisory is in effect for the Calgary Forest Area. Existing permits remain valid but will not be extended. New permits are limited to essential burning. Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited.

Both East and West Rocky View County are also under a fire advisory; and on Friday afternoon The City of Airdrie said a fire advisory was in effect.

There were no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area as of Thursday. Wildland firefighters have begun helicopter patrols to detect and respond to any new ignitions.
