Over 3,000 people are trapped as a wildfire closes in on Pukatawagan in the Mathais Colomb First Nation.
Chief Gordie Bear declared an evacuation in the community on Wednesday, and it's reported that thick smoke led to the closure of their airport, one of the only remaining ways out of the area.
As of Thursday, the fire had grown to over 9,700 hectares and was quickly surrounding the remote island community.
Judith Moore said on Facebook she was evacuated from her home at 3 a.m.
"Ashes and thick smoke. That fire is across our small lake. That's our airport," said Moore. "Had to flee further away cause it was coming closer. End of the island. 28 in one house."
Rebecca Chartrand, MP for Churchill- Keewatinook Aski, says Pukatawagan is receiving support for evacuation.
"I have been informed we have four Hercules aircraft supporting the extraction of Pukatawagan from Norway House to Winnipeg," said Chartrand. "464 have since been evacuated. These four aircrafts will continuously cycle between Norway House and Winnipeg until all are evacuated.
Chartrand says a Twin Otter also arrived in the community last night from the Northwest Territories.
She says the federal and provincial governments are collaborating to get everyone out.
"The Canadian Armed Forces have been deployed and are working hard."
The Manitoba Wildfire Service continues to respond to 22 active wildfires across the province, a total of 103 wildfires to date, well above the average for this date of 80 total fires.
